New Swiss Views is an invitation to rediscover the Swiss landscape in relation to the evolving demographics of the country. While the Muslim community has often been scrutinized from the outside through the media and general press, this project reverses the gaze, centering instead on the world beyond the mosque. From within prayer spaces across Switzerland, Marwan Bassiouni turns his camera outward, looking at the landscapes and environments in which these places of worship exist.
Between August 2021 and November 2022, Bassiouni travelled across nearly two dozen Swiss cantons, photographing views from mosques and prayer spaces overlooking mountains, lakes, cities, suburbs and villages. The resulting images form a double portrait of contemporary Switzerland: of the landscapes surrounding mosques, and of the often modest and discreet interiors of places of worship that have become part of the country's changing cultural landscape. In bringing these two spaces together, the project expands the representation of the Swiss landscape while offering a humanistic perspective rooted in the experience of the Muslim community.
The photographs invite viewers to look beyond difference and to consider the landscape as a form of common ground: a shared view through which we might reflect on our own relationships with one another. Here, the Swiss landscape becomes more than a subject to be observed. It becomes a space for contemplation and introspection, offering a point of connection between people whose backgrounds, beliefs and experiences may differ.
New Swiss Views is the second chapter of Bassiouni's long-term project New Western Views, following New Dutch Views, which takes as its subject Western landscapes seen from inside mosque prayer rooms.
The monograph brings together 41 colour photographs capturing still presences. Immersive, poetic, subtle and quietly uncanny, the images mark a further development in Bassiouni's approach to photographing landscape, characterised by a particular sensitivity to space and natural light. They reveal a familiar Switzerland from an unfamiliar point of view.
